Twelve Hours in the Pleasure Quarters: Hour of the Dog (8pm)
The old Japanese clock system was divided into twelve, and each time had the name of an animal. “The Hour of the Dog” is from eight to nine pm. The Yoshiwara had two show times: day and night. The night show started at around six, the courtesans sat on the scarlet carpet and waited for the customers. This piece depicts a woman who hasn’t had any guests for two hours, and she starts writing a note to one of her regular customers. Her assistant girl kneels obediently with her hands on her knees and listens to her talking. The courtesan leans back and talks to the girl. The figures of the girl and the courtesan support each other well, and create a stable structure.
