Nissaka is 7.2 km away from Kanaya. Hiroshige illustrates a legendary “yonaki ishi”, fabled rocks that cry loudly at night, at the center of the picture. The story depicted here is that of a pregnant lady who was slayed by a bandit, causing her blood to spill on the nearby rock. Since then, the rock cried loudly every night. Travelers would stop their steps as they passed the rock. The picture is an excellent depiction of the sadness that people felt when remembering the legend. Hiroshige illustrates the elevation of the road perhaps a little steeper than it is supposed to be, but he nonetheless depicts the scene well. The structure of the slope of the mountain on the right extending to the left is also excellent. The pine trees standing sparsely on both sides of the route liven up the picture.
