Shimada Station is located 8.8 km way from Fujieda. The station was on the east shore of the Oi River. According to a local folksong, “Even horses can walk the eight miles of the Hakone road, but people cannot easily cross the Oi River.” Once heavy rain fell, the flooding would stop people being able to pass. Hiroshige illustrates the scene of the Oi River crossing with both the Shimada shore and the Kanaya shore on the other side. Hiroshige depicts many travelers excitedly preparing for the crossing, including a daimyo’s procession. It seems that the beautiful color of their clothes emphasizes the vividness around the shore.
