Mariko is 8 km away from Fuchu. Hiroshige illustrates this “special teahouse” that is famous for “tororo-jiru” (grated yam soup). It might be springtime. Plums are budding, the greens in the backyard have started sprouting: the entire atmosphere is peaceful and warm. Hiroshige depicts the scene beautifully: two travelers gulping soup, and a waitress carrying her baby on her back serving refills. The appearance of this woman is said to resemble the waitress Maruko in “Tokaidochu Hizakurige”, written by Jippensha Ikku. This is an example of Hiroshige skillfully capturing the appearance of a character from the written format to his illustration.
