Kanbara is 11.3 km away from Yoshiwara. It is snowing deeply; the houses and mountains are buried with snow, as if they were sleeping quietly. Three people with snow on their head and back are walking down the road. We feel tranquility, as if we could hear only their footsteps into the snow. As a matter of fact, there was not much snow to be seen along the Tokaido; therefore, some say this picture is not set in Kanbara at all. Regardless of the real setting, the expressiveness makes this one of Hiroshige’s masterpieces. This is certainly the best picture among the Hoeido series; furthermore, this snowscape is the most excellent one among the entirety of his works.
