Hara is 6 km away from Mumazu. This work illustrates the scene in the early morning not in Hara Station, but in the area around Ukishimagahara. We see the great figure of Mt. Fuji covered with snow in the foreground, and Mt. Ashitakayama to the right. Because this was the only place to see such great and beautiful scenery, coming across it gave travelers on the Tokaido a sense of relief. As the title indicates, the snow on the right side of Mt. Fuji is tinged red, and the horizon to the far west is a clear, deep blue. The white herons flying in the marsh practically make us feel the cold of the landscape, as well as being a typical feature of Hiroshige’s technique. A group of travelers, including the wife of an upper classman, her assistant and the porter are seen heading west and going down the route.
