Odawara is 16 km away from Oiso. Right before entering Odawara Station, the route crosses the Sakawa River. Because there was no bridge, it was one of the most difficult spots to cross the river. People would cross riding piggy-back on their porter or on the palanquin with a raft. In the picture, a daimyo procession is crossing the river: the porters have put the palanquin on a raft and are carrying it across the river. We can see the Hakone mountain range beginning with Mt. Komagatake in the background, and Odawara Castle and some houses at the foot of the mountain. The travelers crossing the river and the naked porters gathered on the other shore were illustrated as small as the grains of beans. In contrast, the powerful depiction of the Hakone mountain range makes us feel the charm of the picture and the contrast between natural and human power.
