Hodogaya is located 5 km away from Kanagawa. After crossing the “Shinmachibashi Bridge”, you enter the Hodogaya station area. The houses along the road, the faded orange sunset behind the trees, the blue color of the river, a begging priest in the center of the bridge, the lanterns of the Nihachi* soba shop standing at the foot of the bridge ? all of these things remind us that fall is quietly approaching. Two groups are crossing the bridge: one is the daimyo’s processions going back to Edo, and the other is a palanquin going towards Kyoto. It is almost as if we can hear their footsteps going back and forth. Hiroshige, by depicting these travelers as they pass by each other on their journey, appeals to the emotions of the viewer.
