The Courtesan Makiginu of the Tamaya House
Textbooks and a plectrum case are illustrated in front of Shinzo, who is tuning her shamisen (a Japanese three-stringed instrument). She sits with her knee drawn up, a typical sitting posture for playing the instrument. She and the items create one enclosed section of the image. In contrast, a courtesan and assistant girl are illustrated standing. The two groups of people hold the balance and create a perfect structure. The courtesan sits slightly in the front of the image. The lines of the pleats of the kimono create the exact shape of a folding-fan. Although this has a stylized intention, it increases the beauty of the figure. Both the courtesan and the assistant girl’s kimono have a Japanese bush clover pattern. This matching pattern is appealing to the viewer.
