Variegations of Blooms According to their Speech: The Wife
The word “kakaa” (wife) is a slang term for when a child calls out for its mother and the father mimics it in a long tone. This was a series of drawings created in 1803 (Kyowa 3); there are ten drawings in total. A variety of common phrases said by various social ranks of townswomen in Edo are written in the left corner. This is an important record of the spoken language of the Edo period. The woman’s rich skin tone from her face to her breast and the fingers of the baby create lively movement: Utamaro’s vigorous art techniques liven up the whole scene.
