Twelve Hours in the Pleasure Quarters: Hour of the Hare (6am)
This piece is one of the twelve-piece series of pictures depicting a day in the life of a courtesan. “The Hour Of The Hare” was between six and seven in the morning. It was the time at which morning customers started to get ready to leave. When she helped her customer don his haori, a short coat for formal kimono, she saw a daruma drawn on the lining of the coat. The face seems to gaze at the customer sarcastically. It is as if we are being teased by Utamaro. The yellowish background effectively emphasizes her height. This work was done in one of the most mature periods for Utamaro. It is full of smooth line drawings and rich emotions, and received acclaim as his masterpiece.
