A Lesson, Parents’ Spectacles: Bakuren
The word “Bakuren” means a girl who is dead to all sense of shame, tomboyish, and flippant. The beverage in the glass that she is gulping down could be sake. Her posture, carelessly holding up a crab with her left hand, represents her characteristics. If we look closely at her kimono, we can find letters and characters reading ‘men’s mountain’ (otokoyama), ‘diamond-shaped’ (kennbishi), ‘seven plums’ (nanatsuume) and ‘medical sake’ (yomeishyu): these represent sake brands. She exposes her fair skin. Although we could call her a shameless girl, Utamaro still depicts her elegance and warmth that beautiful women have naturally.
