A Mother and Child Peeling a Peach
Around 1798 (Kansei 10), Utamaro started drawing more pictures about not only prostitutes or women in tea stalls, but also people seen in a regular family. The mother’s posture, leaning forward and knees up, seems an unstable posture for us. However, Utamaro stabilized the structure by adding the child; leaning on the mother’s knee and kicking his legs rhythmically. This is Utamaro’s unique skill and dexterity. Some of the items – the glassware, the paper fan, the sleeve rolled up to the shoulder, the exposed breast – remind us of mid-summer. The round-faced mother and the child watching her hands contrast each other, making us smile.
