Mt. Fuji from Senjyu Red-light District
Just as in present-day Fukagawa Kiba, in the past there were many wood wholesalers in Honjo along the Tatekawa River. This work is considered one of the best illustrations of the Honjo area. This features typical Hokusai structure: placing vertical and horizontal lines from the left and right, setting stores on the shoreline in the middle and working people in the foreground. His technique of drawing straight lines is particularly impressive; furthermore, his depiction of the liveliness of the people’s movements is dexterous. Finally, Hokusai skillfully manipulates the perspective ? the figure of Mt. Fuji seen above the vertical rods is impressive.
